Why Should Permanent Makeup Artists Care About Skin Types?

by Teryn Darling October 20, 2023

Let's talk about skin! We're not just slapping on color here, we're creating art on a canvas. A canvas that your client looks at everyday. And that canvas – skin? Well, it comes in all sorts of shades, textures and tones!

That's where understanding your Fitzpatrick skin tone scale comes in handy. This knowledge will help you to understand your client's skin on a deeper level. Now, don't get me wrong, it's just a guideline or suggestion. You are the artist so you have the final say, always!

Why bother learning about skin tones and textures? Well, let me lay it out for you. Every skin type has its quirks, its special traits. From oily to dry, sensitive to resistant, they all come with their own rulebook. And guess what? Knowing those rules can be the difference between a stunning masterpiece and a botched job.

Take pigment selection, for instance. You wouldn't throw the same shade on someone who is a Fitz 1 as you would on a Fitz 5, would you? Of course not. Understanding skin tones and undertones helps you pick the right target colors that'll heal beautifully.

Now, let's talk about technique. Each skin type reacts differently to pigmentation, it dictates your technique. Hair strokes on someone who has oily skin wouldn't work as well as someone who has dry skin. Just because one technique works for a certain skin type DOES NOT mean it will work on another. Knowing your skin canvas means you adjust your strokes as well as your pressure accordingly.

Let’s not forget about how pigment fading is also dependent on your clients skin. Some skin types will retain pigment for longer, while others may need more frequent touch-ups. Just as the example before, knowing this in advance saves you and your clients from unpleasant surprises.

The Fitzpatrick skin tone scale, while a recommendation, is a mighty tool in our arsenal. The significance of comprehending various skin types and the invaluable Fitzpatrick skin tone scale forms the bedrock of our craft. We empower ourselves to recognize their distinct attributes to achieve the most fitting pigments and techniques. In the end every canvas deserves nothing less than perfection.
