Should You Add SMP to Your Services?

by Teryn Darling January 13, 2023

Hair loss can affect anyone at any point during their life, with over 80 million people worldwide currently experiencing it. The emotional impact of hair loss can be extremely traumatic and those that struggle may experience a loss in confidence and a drop in self-esteem. That’s why Scalp Micropigmentation is changing people’s lives!

Scalp Micropigmentation, also referred to as SMP, is a modern cosmetic treatment for thinning hair or hair loss. SMP is a non-surgical procedure where each "hair" is individually dotted into the scalp through the technique of pointillism. On average, most SMP treatments can be completed within three to four sessions.

Unlike other hair-loss treatments such as hair plugs or a hair transplant, SMP is less invasive and requires little to no downtime to recover. Because of this, SMP artists are able to provide instant, life-long results to their clients.

SMP is as unique as every pair of brows a PMU artist creates. Every hair loss situation differs, some clients may want to fill in a scar, others struggle with Alopecia, and some clients are looking for an overall solution to their thinning hair. While SMP won't give your client a new scalp full of hair, it can simulate the look of a fresh shave. Instead of their hair giving the appearance of balding, an SMP client will look like they chose to be bald.

Compared to PMU, SMP is a very unsaturated market, especially for quality artists. You probably know many people already that qualify for SMP, maybe friends, family or colleagues. After you think of the obvious potential clients, think about the acquaintances you could connect with: other kids’ parents, people you see at the gym, your local salons, boutiques and barbers. They may be willing to refer possible clients to you or may be interested in the services themselves! While ultimately the cost of the procedure depends on the amount of work needed, research shows that 3 sessions of a full head can be around $2,500-$4,500 (depending on location).

Though the potential earnings are there, it takes proper training and knowledge to become a good SMP artist. And at the end of the day, improving your clients’ lives will be more rewarding than payment itself.
