What Makes Needle Configurations Different?

by Teryn Darling August 11, 2022

Cosmetic tattoo artists have the important task of selecting the appropriate needle diameter size, count, taper and configuration for every procedure performed. Choosing the right needle directly impacts our work and our results. When we work more efficiently and spend less time in the skin, less trauma is done to the skin and the results heal better! Let’s consider configurations right now.

Liners and shaders are both round configurations but are very different. Liner configurations are tighter at the tip of the needle where the shader is looser at the tip of the needle. What determines the difference on whether a needle is tight or loose is where the solder is placed on the needle.

Solder is a fusible metal alloy used to create a permanent bond between metals. Solder is what is used to fuse the individual needles together to make one needle grouping.

With liner needles, the solder is placed higher and closer to the tips, creating a tighter needle tip that is more rigid. With shader needles, the solder is placed lower and not as close to the tips, creating a looser tip that is more flexible. Liners can be tight or extra tight and shaders can be loose or extra loose, it all just depends where the solder is placed on the needle grouping and what hole is used in the needle jig.

Magnums are super popular for shading and the “go-to” needle type for almost all shading work in the body tattoo industry due to the fact that they pick up, deliver and implant a lot of pigment! They also cover and color in large areas very quickly with less passes and are ideal for gradient blending of colors. Remember: the less passes we have to do the less skin trauma. The mags have always been used in PMU but have become exceptionally popular over the last several years with both lips, areolas and even brows.

After all of these years making, loving and teaching thousands of students about needles, I had the honor and privilege of teaming up with TATSoul to create my own needle line: the OMG Cartridge Needle line! TATSoul is one of the best tattoo needle manufacturers in the world and has been leading the industry through innovation, quality and performance for the last 20 years. I’ve been a customer of theirs for over 10 years and I couldn’t be more proud to have collabed with them!

Many of the needles in this line are a .25 in diameter, and all of the configurations are highly polished with a long taper and a state of the art safety membrane. The patented finger ledge imagined and created by TATSoul brings new comfort and control to this needle line. I was super focused on the small details that matter to us PMU artists. With a variety of configurations to choose from and a variety of diameter sizes when it comes to the single needle…the OMG Needle line will meet the needs of many artists.
